We’re delighted that we have won two awards in the international Museums and the Web 2008 awards. These are really prestigious awards and other winners in the UK are the Tate and the Science Museum. The awards recognise ‘the best work in museum web design and development’. It is a really exceptional achievement and we are very honoured.
Our flagship website, My Brighton and Hove, won the awards. Jack Latimer, the Creative Director of CommunitySites, set up the My Brighton and Hove website in 2000.
Exceptional quality of content
The judges commented on the exceptional quality of the content on the site. CommunitySites have been creating quality websites out of content contributed by website visitors for years – long before the terms ‘user-generated content’ and ‘Web 2.0’ were fashionable. We have learnt how individual contributions can be attracted and nurtured and combined to create high-quality content.
The volunteer editors who run My Brighton and Hove are the real winners. My Brighton and Hove is run by a volunteer co-ordinator, Jennifer Drury, and over the eight years the site has been running over 100 volunteers have been involved.
My Brighton and Hove proves how the energy and enthusiasm of a community can create an online heritage resource. At CommunitySites, we know how to tap into local knowledge and memories, and seek out the treasure-trove of photos and objects in people’s attics. We also know how to do quality work at a reasonable cost.
